چکیده

An elastic–plastic adhesion model for a metallic deformable sphere pressed by a rigid flat is presented. Analytical dimensionless expressions for the local separation outside the contact area and for the adhesion force are provided covering a large range of interference values from a point contact to a fully plastic contact. Two main dimensionless parameters of the problem are identified and their effect on the adhesion is investigated. The significance of the adhesion in the elastic–plastic contact force balance is discussed and the regimes where adhesion is important or negligible are pointed out. A comparison of the present results with a previously published approximate elastic–plastic model shows substantial differences in the local separation and in the adhesion force.  2003 Elsevier Science (USA). Effect of Strain Hardening on Unloading of a Deformable Sphere Loaded against a Rigid Flat – A Finite Element Study

The present study considers an elastic-plastic contact analysis during loading-unloading of a deformable sphere with a rigid flat using finite element method. The effect of strain hardening on the contact behavior of a nonadhesive frictionless elastic-plastic contact is analyzed using commercial finite element software ANSYS. To study the strain hardening effect different values of tangent modu...

Transient Thermomechanical Contact of an Impacting Sphere on a Moving Flat

Contact between a slider and a magnetic recording disk is modeled as transient contact of a sphere on a moving flat. The sphere is assumed to be rigid, and the flat is treated as an elastic-plastic body with isotropic hardening. Heat generation is related to friction at the contact interface. Dimensionless solutions are obtained for maximum temperature rise, maximum contact force, maximum conta...

A comparison of stick and slip contact conditions for a coated sphere compressed by a rigid flat

A finite element analysis is used to study the elastic-plastic contact of a coated sphere compressed by a rigid flat under the stick contact condition. This was done for a wide range of hard coating material properties and coating thicknesses. A comparison with the slip contact condition is presented in terms of the critical contact parameters (at yield inception) and plasticity evolution. Empi...

Flattening of a deformable sphere by a rigid sphere during transient thermo-mechanical contact

A finite element model is developed to study the transient thermo-mechanical contact between a rigid sphere and an elastic–plastic sphere. Interference and tangential displacement are applied to the rigid sphere while the elastic–plastic sphere is stationary. The radius of the rigid sphere is larger than that of the elastic–plastic sphere to model flattening. Universal solutions are obtained fo...

A Contact Problem of an Elastic Layer Compressed by Two Punches of Different Radii

The elasticity mixed boundary values problems dealing with half-space contact are generally well resolved. A large number of these solutions are obtained by using the integral transformation method and methods based the integral equations. However, the problems of finite layer thicknesses are less investigated, despite their practical interests. This study resolves a quasi-stationary problem of...
